Knowledge of the size and distribution of nanoparticles in solution is critical to understanding the observed enhancements in thermal conductivity and heat transfer of nanofluids. We have applied small-angle X-ray scattering (SAXS) to the characterization of SiO2 nanoparticles (10–30 nm) uniformly dispersed in a water-based fluid using the Advanced Photon Source at Argonne National Laboratory. Size distributions for the suspended nanoparticles were derived by fitting experimental data to an established model. Thermal conductivity of the SiO2 nanofluids was also measured, and the relation between the average particle size and the thermal conductivity enhancement was established. The experimental data contradict models based on fluid interfacial layers or Brownian motion but support the concept of thermal resistance at the liquid–particle interface.  相似文献

The fluorescence characteristics of selected hallucinogenic drugs dissolved in solutions of α-cyclodextrin and β-cyclodextrin are reported. Fluorescence intensity enhancements in cyclodextrin media relative to aqueous solution range from 1.2 to 4.0, probably because inclusion of the drugs into cyclodextrin increases the quantum yield. Calibration graphs are linear over 2–3 orders of magnitude; limits of detection are 6–13 μg l?1 for ibogaine and N,N-dimethyltryptamine. The mescaline derivatives show limits of detection in the 0.8–1.4 ppm range. The role of cyclodextrin in enhancing the fluorescence intensities and some of the criteria for this fluorescence enhancement are discussed.  相似文献

Peak dispersion effects in nonaqueous capillary electrophoretic separations of aromatic anionic analytes were investigated in a propanolic background electrolyte solution. Poly(glycidylmethacrylate-co-N-vinylpyrrolidone) coating was applied to the capillary to suppress the electroosmotic flow and to improve the repeatability of the migration times. Electrical field strengths up to 2000 Vcm(-1) were applied in separations and the separation efficiencies were compared with theoretical values calculated on the basis of plate height theory. The contributions to the total plate height were calculated for injection plug length, diffusion, Joule heating, electromigration dispersion, analyte adsorption to the capillary wall, and detector slit aperture length. Analyte diffusion coefficients were measured by Taylor dispersion method, while distribution constants were measured chromatographically. Agreement between the calculated and empirical results was fairly good even though some approximations were required. In most cases the longitudinal diffusion contribution governed the total plate height, while the contribution of Joule heating was insignificant even at exceptionally high field strengths used. The relatively long detection slit aperture was found to influence the separation efficiency strongly, while the other dispersion sources that were investigated were of minor importance, except for adsorption in the case of one analyte. With all analytes, the dispersive effect of longitudinal diffusion was reduced as the field strength was increased, leading to enhanced migration velocities and faster separations.  相似文献

The preparation and characterization of self-assembled monolayers on copper with n-alkyl and functional thiols was investigated. Well-ordered monolayers were obtained, while the copper remained oxide-free. Direct attachment of N-succinimidyl mercaptoundecanoate (NHS-MUA) onto the copper surface allowed for the successful attachment of biomolecules, such as β-d-glucosamine, the tripeptide glutathione, and biotin. Notably, the copper surfaces remained oxide-free even after two reaction steps. All monolayers were characterized by static water contact angle measurements, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, and infrared reflection absorption spectroscopy. In addition, the biotinylated copper surfaces were employed in the immobilization of biomolecules such as streptavidin.  相似文献

Controlled chemical delivery in microfluidic cell culture devices often relies on slowly evolving diffusive gradients, as the spatial and temporal control provided by fluid flow results in significant cell-perturbation. In this paper we introduce a microfluidic device architecture that allows for rapid spatial and temporal soluble signal delivery over large cell culture areas without fluid flow over the cells. In these devices the cell culture well is divided from a microfluidic channel located directly underneath the chamber by a nanoporous membrane. This configuration requires chemical signals in the microchannel to only diffuse through the thin membrane into large cell culture area, rather than diffuse in from the sides. The spatial chemical pattern within the microfluidic channel was rapidly transferred to the cell culture area with good fidelity through diffusion. The cellular temporal response to a step-function signal showed that dye reached the cell culture surface within 45 s, and achieved a static concentration in under 6 min. Chemical pulses of less than one minute were possible by temporally alternating the signal within the microfluidic channel, enabling rapid flow-free chemical microenvironment control for large cell culture areas.  相似文献

For homogeneous isotropic turbulence study, the acquisition of band-pass filtered velocity increments (FVI) in a non-forced turbulent box is still a challenge both experimentally and numerically. Turbulence and associated physical processes, at a given instant, are permanently contaminated by a forcing process which can seldom be universal. The situation tends to be the origin of intermittency and the non-Gaussian probability density distribution for acceleration and velocity gradients. To reveal implied mechanism, grid turbulence is adapted to observe non-perturbed homogeneous isotropic turbulence. The velocity increments (VI) can be obtained following Comte-Bellot and Corrsin (GCBC) by means of two point-two time shifted velocity measurements. It is difficult to obtain decaying turbulence (DT) at large turbulent Reynolds number without pollution coming from walls. Nevertheless it is also significant to investigate DT in low Reynolds number regimes to determine non-polluted tendencies. The similarity of DT between particle image velocimetry (PIV) and hot wire anemometry measurements by GCBC are presented. Here we focus our tendency on VI and FVI probability density function (PDF) shapes in this letter. In conclusion, the tendency to Gaussian shape in inertial zone wavenumbers, demonstrates that there will be no intermittency if turbulent cascade is not perturbed.  相似文献

We consider stochastic multicriteria decision-making problems with multiple decision makers. In such problems, the uncertainty or inaccuracy of the criteria measurements and the partial or missing preference information can be represented through probability distributions. In many real-life problems the uncertainties of criteria measurements may be dependent. However, it is often difficult to quantify these dependencies. Also, most of the existing methods are unable to handle such dependency information.In this paper, we develop a method for handling dependent uncertainties in stochastic multicriteria group decision-making problems. We measure the criteria, their uncertainties and dependencies using a stochastic simulation model. The model is based on decision variables and stochastic parameters with given distributions. Based on the simulation results, we determine for the criteria measurements a joint probability distribution that quantifies the uncertainties and their dependencies. We then use the SMAA-2 stochastic multicriteria acceptability analysis method for comparing the alternatives based on the criteria distributions. We demonstrate the use of the method in the context of a strategic decision support model for a retailer operating in the liberated European electricity market.  相似文献
